The Golden Age of Blogging...Arising Again?

Cloudy days are rare here, and they usually place me into an introspective mood. I was thinking about blogging, how it was in the early days, how there seems (I hope) to be a resurgence, and then more thinking about Facebook versus blogging. I'll save that last thought for another post.

One of the fun things in the early days of blogs was the giveaways. They added so much excitement to the community. During the time blogs were really hoppin', there were giveaways in abundance. Sometimes they were held to encourage commenting, and sometimes just to reward faithful readers, and sometimes just  because the blogger was so generous-natured.

I am noticing that on Facebook, in some of the groups, there are giveaways happening. I think the "Groups" are following along a track similar to what happened in blogs, but I will boast here that I do not think Groups will ever equal the true community of blogging.

I was happy to see a giveaway on a BLOG the other day! It made me smile, thinking of the heyday and how fun those times were, and how strongly blogging is rebounding.

I like to comment on blogs (one childhood nickname was "Loud Mouth Lime" due to my spouting off constantly) - just to add in my little bit of knowledge, chit-chat, or support. But a comment left did enter me into a giveaway, and I won, over at Acorn Hollow! What a wonderful bounty: Hooked pillow that is an absolute heirloom, hooked heart box with delicious chocolates (even shared with hubby), let me add here all wrapped so beautifully, fuzzy socks I put on immediately, and fussy-cut vintage Valentines. As someone obssesed with paper items, I can't tell you what a thrill the Valentines gave me! It is all so lovely.

Just take a look:

Lovely Valentine's red wrapping

BUNNY ALERT: An heirloom of my house now, in pride of place on the mantel

Two of the dear Valentines
Thank you, Cathy, of Acorn Hollow! Charming name for a very charming blog! If you admire hooked rugs and love sweet blogs like I do, please visit Acorn Hollow. Her work is beautiful, and just wait until you see her new workroom devoted to her rugs.

It truly is delightful, for me, to follow the blogs I do, and read and see their posts. Some may think that their days or their gardens or their thoughts or crafts aren't "interesting" enough for a blog or worthy of a post, but I assure you, I read them with great interest and learn many things, am reminded of many things (my mind will go a mile a minute on the memories I recall), and take joy in the "small things" written about, photographed, and shared. And I am hardly alone! There is a whole army of us out there, who really enjoy the special sharing done on blogs. And once again, our ranks are growing!

    1. Thank you! And I wanted to mention I got the book you recommended on your blog, "The Country Kitchen," and I am loving it! Real old-time lore, some I didn't know and very valuable! Plus it's hilarious.

  4. Congratulations, again, Holly, on a wonderful win indeed. And how fun that Cathy wrapped them all. Even when I purchase something, I am always so delighted when the seller takes the time to wrap it....no matter how simply. Yes, blogging.... I do hope you are correct that it may be enjoying a resurgence. I was one of those that started "way back when"....I strayed and went MIA several times, but Blogland always called me back. I am on FB, but I truly do not interact there much....and truth be told, many of my "friends" there are people I don't know. I used to have a selling group on FB, so there were many people who ended up on my friends list as a result...or from my participation in other groups.. I could never keep up in any meaningful way there. And even if I could, I find FB does not lend itself to the deepness of relationships that blogging does. I have made many friends here and ones who I consider more of a friend than others I actually have met. And speaking of giveaways, I think it may be time for one sometime relatively soon on my own blog....now to ocme up with a suitable gift.... Hmmmm. ~Robin~

  6. Darling Holly,

How wonderful that you won and what treasures you have received. We love receiving parcels in the post [although not in Hungary since they usually go 'missing'] and what excitement to open such a beautifully wrapped set of gifts.

We feel that you are right about a blogging revival. Having been absent for some six years, it is good to reconnect with old blogging chums and to make new acquaintances. And, we notice that people are finding it reassuring to reach out and connect with others in these times when we are all looking for better days ahead.

And, everyone has something that they can say. They only need confidence.

  7. I am so glad you got the package in a timely manner I have had issues with the post office! I am glad you enjoy the humble offerings. The valentines are copies of vintage ones my mother gave me years ago.
    Happy Valentines!

    1. The offerings were anything but humble! Heirlooms and joy-bringers is more like it! Those vintage Valentine images -- I have never seen them before and I have perhaps 600 digital images of old Valentines. They are wonderful! I treasure them and all that you sent, and I so enjoy your blog.

  8. Congrats on your blog win! I have met Cathy in person and she is indeed a sweetheart.
I would love to see a resurgence in blogging, but even though a few people have returned or started blogging, many are also leaving for the ease of Facebook and Instagram. I am long overdue for a give-away!

    1. Cathy's kindness comes shining through in her blog, I think! How lucky to meet blog friends in person. I love the community feeling of blogs. To me, FB and Instagram just don't have that good feeling. But they are so popular.

    2. I totally agree about the good feeling from blogging. I have been fortunate that I have gotten to meet quite a few people because of blogging!
      Happy Valentine's Day ;-)

  10. It was so nice to find your blog! I have been blogging since January 2008, and love it. So many of my blogging friends have moved on to Facebook or Instagram, but I don't feel that fellowship there. I am happy to find some new interesting blogs to follow. It is really a long time since I had a give-away, I will have that in mind and see if I can do something about it. Happy Valentine's day!

    1. So nice of you to drop by and comment, thank you! Yes, so many moved to FB but they are very different on there, as you say, there is not the feeling of fellowship. I look forward to reading your blog! I need to have a spring giveaway, too!

  11. What a terrific prize!
I have NEVER liked Facebook. Blogging is just more about the interest of the blogger & not trying to "collect" friends like FB'ers.

  12. What a wonderful giveaway, and so glad you won it. Yes, the old days of blogging.....you got me reminiscing about it. That pillow is so pretty, and there's nothing like warm fuzzy socks. And chocolate! That's a special treat.

  14. Oh I hope so!!!!!!!!!

I'm an Old Gal who has been blogging for years. I began, wayyyyy back, when you had to be "invited" to start a blog. Live Journal it was.

Wayyy back then, I was on International Mailing Lists and was "invited," by a young man in Dublin, Ireland, to make a blog, on Live Journal.

Can you imagine that, having to be "invited"??? -smile-

And back then, was very, very interesting! I have so many memories, of so many people I met and interacted with, way back then. I "traveled-the-world', from my computer chair.

Also, I agree with you.... That blogging posts do not have to be about Fabbbbbbbbbbulous Happppenings! Just what has been going on, in one's own little world. One's thoughts... One's wonderings.... A book, we enjoyed. A show.. A .... You get the idea. Posts do not have to be about 'Fan-tab-u-lous Things.' -smile-

    Happy to meet you!!!!!

  15. I remember a Give Away I won, way back. From way across our Beloved Country. And the mixing bowl, which was part of it, is still in use. -smile-

But I don't thing the lady is still blogging, about "Merryville."
