Cheap Entertainment and Bye-Bye to My Job

I haven't posted much lately. I find that when my life gets fraught with difficulties or upsetting things, I can't post. I just become what I call "stuck in molasses," unable to move forward for a bit. I go peek in at blogs, but sometimes can't leave a comment because I feel too bad.

I just finished up my two weeks' notice at my school secretary job and again am staring at Indeed.com, looking for a job.

Sadly, there are toxic places run by toxic people in this world. There are people who aren't naturally good people, who do not try to be good people. There are those who demean, who lie, who border on violence, and sometimes they are the bosses. And Christian communities are not immune to having these people in them, in positions of power.

Even though I had been treated very roughly and harshly already at the job, I tried to just be calm and not let it get me down. But it went to a new level.

Short version of what happened: Told to alter the financial records in a way that was fraudulent, in order to appear in better shape financially before trying for a loan. Politely refused after spending hours seeing if it was possible to alter them in a non-fraudulent way. Called on the carpet and screamed at and demeaned for 40 minutes. Called mean names, cursed at. I shook all the way home.

Sometimes, you have to draw that boundary line. I'm glad I did. I found out after resigning that the people who went crazy at me for not altering the books served time in the federal prison system for financial fraud at their former business. Wow.

In happier news, I decided to get the car washed in one of those wonderful automatic carwash places. I love going through them, although sometimes the poor guys have to delay the line, because I am very bad at getting the tire onto the little conveyer-belt thing. There are free vacuums at the end -- they are powerful!  I took my husband along for an "outing." He enjoys going on rides, usually, although that's getting tiring for him, too. The rides have to be pretty short or on very smooth roads.

I do wish the conveyer-belt moved more slowly in these car washes. I think the wash would be better if the cars were in there a bit longer.

It is hard not to stomp on the brake while going through.

Even though I know it's just bullcorn, I cannot resist sometimes getting the "hot wax" portion of the wash as an "upgrade." It's just colored lights to make some suds look "hot," but I love it. I always think to myself, "I am paying extra for a light bulb to be turned on." I don't know why that's so amusing to me. But the color is just incredible. You are looking at $3 worth of color below!

This was a lucky carwash, because while vacuuming, I found my husband's long-lost pocket knife! Super lucky day!

I hope you are having a lovely September! Brrrrr, the "ber" months! Yes, can't wait for a cool snap and the turn of the year!

Kind regards,

The Olde Dame

  4. I knew they were taking advantage of you, but really? That is beyond awful. I can't believe you gave them two weeks notice!!! That says a lot for your character.
Now on to bigger and better things ;-)

    1. I always try to do my best and do what I think is honorable. But it was nerve-wracking to stay! I need to go by and see your latest rugs!!! You were showing some gorgeous ones from your latest travels.

  5. Holly, I'm sorry you had to go through all of that, but I'm glad that you're out of there now. And I do hope you find the right job that suits you. I chuckled when you mentioned the car wash because I'm really bad going through them too. Can't seem to figure them out sometimes haha. It's nice that your husband got to come along with you on your outing. That's a cool car wash - I've never got the hot wax before. Wow, yours created a rainbow solution.

I hope you have blessed September days, Holly, and things get better for you. : )

    1. Oh Sheri, I can't figure them out very well either! I keep going to this one when I can afford it, because I know where to drive in, and they have lights that show you when to put the car in neutral. And when to go! I hope your autumn in your lovely mountain town is going to be beautiful!

  6. I bet you are glad you stuck to your principals as you would have been the fall person.
It is a brisk 60 degrees here this evening fall is in the air. We will still have very warm days but they will be fewer and fewer.

  7. This is just insane, Holly. So glad your character came through and you knew what lines could NOT be crossed. I'm really proud of your bravery and courage to stay te course. I am proud to "know" you, dear.

I like to wash my own car. I spend time getting under the wheel wells where the automatic car washes often miss. That's especially true during the winter, when the city lays down a combination of sand and salt to melt the snow and ice. I enjoyed seeing you go through yours, though. It's sadly, still very, very hot here in Kansas, still.

    1. I'm so decrepit now, I don't think I could actually wash it myself. I admire your gumption in washing it yourself and even knowing about the wheel wells!

  8. How sorry I am you were in such a situation. I sympathize, I was the controller of a division of a large corporation, back in the patriarchal days. Only woman amongst many men. I am sure I lost my job for overhearing my boss discuss something illegal.

  9. I work for a major bank and was asked one time to change the books for my boss to show his boss how great he was doing. I did do it, but also sent his boss a copy of the real books. Did for months and felt good about it, because I knew it was the right thing to do. Good on you for quitting. You do not need that type of toxic environment. Sometimes you just have to think of you. 10. You are going to be much happier now that you no longer have that job. And you dodged a bullet. If you had falsified the records guess who would take the blame and go to prison.

  11. So sorry to read of these Sweet Holly...but I admire and respect you all the more for doing what you did. One can live without the comforts a paycheck can provide, but one's soul can't truly "live" without morals and integrity. There came a day when I came home after a 14-hr day and looked at my husband and said I would rather live in a trailer house and work at McDonald's than keep doing what I expected to do. And mind you, we were not living high off the hog...or even remotely close....the way it was. Looking back, I only wish I had had the nerve to leave sooner. Too funny about the car wash...but defintely pretty. Sending prayers for peace in the decision you've made and success in finding a better "fit" job-wise. Sad to think this is going on in a so-called "Christian" community. ~Robin~

  12. I've been reading the previous comments and there's not much I can add. I agree that you needed to get out of that situation. Hopefully you find a different job where they appreciate you.
I wouldn't have the nerve to go to one of those car washes but I'd enjoy being a passenger. Unfortunately we don't have one in our town.

  13. Oh my goodness my dear Holly! I can feel your pain...have been there and done that not just once, and from "Christian organizations" as well, which made me very sad. People are people everywhere, and sometimes people are wolves in sheep's clothing, and when their deeds come to the light they become vicious. You were very nice to give them 2 weeks notice. I had a situation where it was so bad I just had to call them from home and tell them I would not be back, and then wrote a letter of explanation that went to their bosses over them. I am SO sorry you had to go through this, but I am glad you stood your ground and did the right thing. God will honor your faith and honesty and He will take care of you. Just keep your eyes on Him and He will show you the next step. Praying for you right now. (((hugs))). I love your car wash pictures! What fun! Glad you found a way to wash your troubles away a bit! :) God bless you dear friend. I will keep praying. You did the RIGHT thing. God sees and knows and He will take care of you.

    1. Thank you so much for your prayers and words, Pamela. It really buoys me up! But I am so sorry you also have had bad workplace experiences, too. I would not have done the two weeks but I loved the school kids and didn't want anything to impact their days. It was hard to go in and have that smile on my face but I agree, God will set me in a situation I need to be in!

  14. Oh my! The paranoid streak I have just popped up and said it's CYA (cover your a**) time and if possible, make copies of the finances now and every day before you leave. Just in case those jerks do something and say you did it. Pity you didn't grab your phone and ask them to repeat that request while recording their request and reaction at your refusal. Things like this reinforce my belief that the louder someone screeches about what a wonderful Christian (or whatever religion) they are, the tighter grip you should keep on your checkbook and own integrity. You done good, though I probably would not have given them 2 weeks notice.

You are right - those hot waxes in the car wash are nothing like a good hand waxing, but then again you don't get pretty lights with hand waxing. The light headed feeling from bending over polishing the lower bits or trying to stand back up just isn't the same!

  15. I'd pay extra for the colorful hot wax too!!
My son had a job like this too. He resigned. The "big wigs" of the company ended up in prison. You made a good choice!!

    Happy weekend.

  16. I'm sorry you had to go through that Holly. Every dog has his day as the saying goes, and they will have theirs either here, or elsewhere. You are best away from that type of situation. You won't be caught up in it when it hits the fan, and it will it always does.

  17. I am sorry you had to go thru what you did. You are a BRAVE lady and you did the correct thing. We have to stay strong in keeping the light shining, sadly corruption is all around us, as well as evil!!
Thank you for sharing your news.
God Bless.. Keep up the GOOD FIGHT!
