Giveaway Winner and...Shy Violets Already

Nature is so amazing. Where there was ice-blasted grass and brown soil, there is now new green and a sprinkling of early violets. These are growing near a grotto on the grounds of a former convent. I lived here once, long ago. I think these are the only violets in Las Cruces, and they grow only near the Grotto. I think they grow for Mary, Queen of Heaven. Since I lived there, the statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe was removed from the Grotto. They can remove her statue, but the very earth remembers!

And...we have a winner! I did this old-style, with bits of paper that we put in a bag, and my husband drawing the winner.

Sheri at Red Rose Alley, a delightful blog, congratulations! If you email me your address, I will send off your giveaway items.

This was so fun for me, that I am wondering...any of you interested in a giveaway featuring seeds? I have so many, many unusual seeds, for all climates and all skill levels. Let me know in the comments if anyone is interested in a Spring Seed Giveaway, and please, if you have any thoughts or stories about gardening from seed, tell them in the comments or even in a blog post, as your time permits. I know weekends can be busy.

See you soon, on the blogs...

Kind regards,

The Merry Olde Dame, Holly

  1. Congratulations to Sheri at Red Rose Alley. I should go and visit her. About the seeds, that might be a problem if you're sending them out of your country. One would have to check that out.
Those early Violets are so pretty.

    1. There are some I cannot send out of country, or even to other states, so I won't include those (like red cotton)!

    1. Sowing seeds is so fun! I haven't seen any of the many, many poppy seeds I sowed showing up...but still fun to plant them. I do have some early nasturtiums showing up.

    1. I hope you find some violets in your area. Your poor palm trees! Some of them here in New Mex also "got it" during the freeze. But some are hardy.

  7. Ohhh I so love Violets! It isn't really Spring to me, until I see them, in the yard. -smile- And the yards are still snow covered, so it's a long ways off.

I am in the upper NE of the US, so many seeds, would probably not do well here. And I'd hate to win them, from someone, who could use them. So.......... I don't know what to say, about entering.

My husband has had fun, starting seeds. -smile- He has more of a Green Thumb, than I do!!!!!!!!

Oh and Congratulations to your Winner!!!!

    1. Due to being an avid seed trader, I have lots of seeds from the north! I will probably see if those at my parish want any, maybe put them out where I put the rosaries I make.

  8. Congrats to the winner.
I grew up on a small farm. Always lots of goods from the gardens (though back them I did not appreciate them nor did I eat any veggies besides corn and tomatoes...which I know is a fruit). I'd love to have a garden now, but my yard is tiny and the deer think whatever I plant is theirs...sigh. With that being said, I would have to pass on a seed give away...but very generous of you.

  9. Congratulations to Sheri, her and I became acquainted through your blog dear Dame. The violets are lovely, and I belief the earth does remember. I like the idea of a seed giveaway,or even a seed swap. Do Hollyhocks come back year after year? I threw some seeds out last year willy nilly, all summer nothing, toward the fall something with huge leaves almost heartshaped popped up about 2', my "deer" friends had a snack and pruned it for me. I'm hoping it comes back, and I hope it is a Hollyhock they are lovely.

  11. Congratulations to Sheri on a great win and thank you, Holly, for hostessing such a generous giveaway. Although spring is a long way off here, my lone mourning dove has once again taken up sentry on the garage below and serenades me, so there is hope. I would love a seed giveaway, but so little grows here in this cold, cold, Land of Nod...and, for some reason, I am not very adept at growing things from seed, so I would need a remedial course....and lots and lots of luck LOL. ~Robin~
